The European Invasive Alien Species Rapid-Response Fund, co-funded by the European Union and managed through IUCN SOS, provides targeted grants to address new and emerging invasive alien species before they become widely established. The fund supports rapid, on-the-ground interventions focusing on early detection, eradication and coordinated response.
Why it matters
Invasive alien species can damage native ecosystems, disrupt fisheries, aquaculture and tourism, and generate significant economic costs. Acting during the early stages of an invasion offers the best opportunity to prevent long-term establishment and spread. The fund can support rapid eradication operations, response planning, coordination with local authorities and stakeholders, and monitoring to verify the success of interventions.
Who can apply
Applications are open to conservation organisations, research institutions and public authorities operating in the European Union. Projects may address invasive plants, animals or macroalgae at an early stage of invasion. The geographical scope includes EU Member States and explicitly covers the Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands, making the opportunity particularly relevant to Atlantic island and coastal ecosystems.
