Offshore wind energy has been a key sector of the blue economy for many years. Framed by the European Green Deal, and pushed by renewable energy targets and the desire to achieve energy independence, it is now set to experience renewed growth in the Baltic Sea Region. While maritime spatial planning is an important enabler of offshore wind energy expansion, it also has to anticipate conflicts that may arise with other interests and competing sea uses.
Under the German VASAB Chairmanship in 2022 the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs and the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency are hosting a webinar with a focus on offshore wind energy as a key driver of a sustainable long-term perspective in the Baltic Sea Region.
The webinar will discuss the consequences of offshore wind energy expansion for the environment and other sectors. Examples from around the Baltic Sea Region will illustrate how maritime spatial planning is dealing with the challenges of offshore wind energy expansion in practice. The webinar will also discuss where the Baltic Sea Region states see the greatest knowledge needs and potential for sharing solutions.
The event will be held online on 9 June 2022 from 9:00 to 12:00 CET.
