On 20 May 2021, the European Atlas of the Seas will participate in the online workshop 'Ocean literacy through visualisation and storytelling: local, regional and international examples' hosted by the Irish Ocean Literacy Network (IOLN).
This workshop will explore best practices used in current ocean literacy initiatives and present some of the most inspiring ocean literacy “stories”. Participants will share knowledge and expertise, and discuss the future of ocean literacy in Europe. How can we connect and build an integrated ocean literacy movement in the European Union? Using the examples of the local youth projects, national programmes and the European Atlas of the Seas, the official digital mapping tool of DG MARE dedicated to ocean literacy, we will discuss this question.
The workshop will be moderated by Noirin Burke, Co- Secretariat of the Irish Ocean Literacy Network. Speakers will include:
- Patrícia Conceição, Directorate General for Maritime Policy, Portuguese Blue Schools (Escola Azul)
- Easkey Britton, world-renowned surfer, marine social scientist and writer and member of the IOLN
- Nicola Bridge, President, European Marine Science Educators Association
- Nathalie Van Isacker, EMODnet Secretariat, European Atlas of the Seas
The workshop is held as part of the European Maritime Day activities.
