2013 – 2023: 10 years of the Galway Statement. Celebrating a decade of marine research cooperation along and across the Atlantic – Our Shared Resource
Much has happened since the Galway Statement was signed in May 2013 between Canada, the European Union and the United States of America. To celebrate this decade of achievement and renew our shared commitment to the Atlantic Ocean, the Irish Government and the European Commission, together with the Marine Institute and the University of Galway will organise a hybrid event in Galway (Ireland), on 5-6 July 2023.
Together with European and international Atlantic partners and actors, the event will showcase:
- How a new Atlantic Ocean research and innovation community was formed;
- How the different initiatives and common work impacted joint research roadmaps and inspired new discoveries and how they brought benefits to coastal communities, citizens and young people;
- Inspirational and intergenerational discussions and engagement to build an All-Atlantic Alliance.
The event will also look at the continuation and future deepening of this work so that it is fully embedded in the signing of the new All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance Ministerial Declaration in Washington D.C. on 13 July 2022 and the future work ahead. Finally, this event will also lead the way up towards the 2023 All-Atlantic Forum in South Africa.
Last but not least, it will interconnect with new strategic mobilisation initiatives that meanwhile have also been launched in Europe, such as the Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’, with its Atlantic and Arctic lighthouse, and ensure that all this supports the UN Decade of Ocean Science, and more broadly the UN Sustainable Development Agenda 2030.
