Interact Launches New Survey to Map Tourism in Interreg Programmes

Tourism is one of the most dynamic and rapidly expanding fields within Interreg, playing a key role in regional development, job creation, and improved infrastructure across Europe. With global tourist arrivals expected to reach 1.8 billion by 2030, the sector’s importance, and the need to ensure its sustainable development, continues to grow.

To deepen understanding of how tourism-related cooperation is evolving across Europe, Interact has launched a new survey designed to map the current state of tourism within Interreg programmes. The initiative invites programme colleagues to share their experiences, insights, and perspectives, contributing to a clearer, evidence-based picture of how tourism projects are being shaped today and how future challenges can be addressed.

About the Survey

The survey focuses on tourism-related cooperation projects funded under the 2021–2027 programming period, while also inviting reflections on past experience and future perspectives beyond 2027. It takes 10–15 minutes to complete and is open to all programme authorities and colleagues working within the Interreg framework.

Deadline: 28 February 2026

For Interreg, this is an important opportunity to gather meaningful, comparable data that will help shape a more sustainable tourism landscape across Europe.

Why This Survey Matters

Tourism brings undeniable economic and social benefits, but many destinations now face challenges such as overtourism and environmental pressure. By collecting first-hand insights from Interreg actors, the survey aims to:

  • Build an up‑to‑date overview of tourism initiatives across programmes

  • Identify common challenges, good practices, and emerging trends

  • Support future planning to ensure tourism remains sustainable, balanced, and beneficial for local communities and visitors alike
