ETP Champions: Recognising Leadership in Europe’s Energy Transition

The European Commission launched the ETP Champions initiative, a new best‑practices competition under the Energy Transition Partnership (ETP) for EU Fisheries and Aquaculture, aimed at recognising outstanding projects and solutions that actively support the sector’s energy transition.

This first edition of the Energy Transition for EU Fisheries and Aquaculture Champions, taking place in 2026, highlights forward‑looking initiatives that contribute to increased energy efficiency, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and the deployment of innovative technologies across fisheries and aquaculture value chains.

Recognising Innovation and Leadership

The ETP Champions competition rewards concrete and replicable solutions that help fisheries and aquaculture communities progress towards climate neutrality. Selected champions are intended to serve as models of innovation, efficiency and sustainability for the wider sector.

Projects and solutions can be submitted under three main award categories:

  1. Innovations for energy transition in fishing operations, focusing on solutions that improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions in fisheries;

  2. Advancements in energy efficiency for aquaculture, recognising approaches that support low‑carbon and energy‑efficient aquaculture systems;

  3. Infrastructure innovation award, highlighting developments in alternative fuels, port infrastructure, storage, distribution and on‑board processes essential for the energy transition.

Who Can Apply

The competition is open to registered legal entities implementing projects or solutions in one or more EU Member States. Eligible solutions must meet a minimum Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 7 and align with at least one of the awarded categories.

Applications must be submitted in English via the official online application form by 2 April 2026. All applicants will be informed of the results in the second half of April 2026.

Celebrating Champions at European Maritime Day 2026

The selected ETP Champions will be officially recognised during a dedicated award ceremony at European Maritime Day 2026, taking place on 22 May 2026 in Limassol, Cyprus

By showcasing successful and scalable solutions, the ETP Champions initiative contributes to the broader objectives of the Energy Transition Partnership, supporting cooperation, knowledge sharing and innovation to accelerate the transition of EU fisheries and aquaculture towards a more sustainable and climate‑neutral future.

More information on the initiative, eligibility criteria and application process is available on the ETP Champions page.
