Carlos Botana LAGARÓN | Head of sustainability department in Port Authority of Vigo

Biography:

Carlos Botana Lagarón is the Pillar Coordinator for the period of 2022-2024.

Head of Sustainability and development Policies in the port of Vigo (Spain) and Chairman of the blue growth network “European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO)” and, since 2022, Member of Climate and Energy Committee of IAPH
(International Association of Ports and Harbours). PHD program in climate Change, M. Sc. Sciences of the Seas. Over 19 years of experience in management in commercial, fishing and port environment in the port of Vigo. He has worked in more than sixteen European projects about environment and development in several programs (FP7-THEME 7, life, life +, Feder, and others). Expert in environmental implementation, quality, and security systems. Member of the Sustainability and Development Committee of ESPO “European Sea Ports Organisation” since 2013. He has worked in SOLUZIONA CALIDAD Y MEDIO AMBIENTE, Head of Projects Public Administration developing projects in several Port Authorities in Spain such us: Port of Las Palmas, Port of Coruña, Port of Ferrol, Port of Vilagarcía, Port of Vigo.

Liam LACEY  | Director of the Irish Maritime Development Office

Biography:

Liam Lacey was the Pillar Coordinator between 2020-2022. Liam Lacey is Director of the Irish Maritime Development Office (IMDO) and formerly worked with Irish Continental Group as Managing Director of its Container and Terminal Division.  He has extensive experience in shipping, chartering and port development.  He is a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland and holds a Masters Degree in management from Trinity College, Dublin.  Before joining the IMDO, Liam lectured in the area of strategic management and innovation in NUI Maynooth.  Liam was a member of IBEC’s Transport Council, which represents the views of industry in the area of transport and logistics.

Goal 1: Ports as gateways for trade in the Atlantic

Actions:

► Develop the TEN-T Motorways of the Sea in the Atlantic

► Create a network of green ports by 2025

► Foster short-sea shipping links in the Atlantic area to better integrate Ireland

► Launch an Atlantic strategy on liquefied natural gas

► Develop eco-incentive schemes to upgrade port infrastructure

► Jointly develop waste and handling plans for Atlantic ports

Goal 2: Ports as catalysts for business

Actions:

► Develop a blue accelerator scheme for Atlantic ports to help scale up innovative businesses

► Share best practices, exchange ideas and tackle problems jointly

► Expand data collection beyond traditional (logistics) data

► Increase communication and availability of data on the economic potential of ports
